Amazon in Talks to Buy AI Startup Decart in Deal Valued Around $7 Billion

The Wall Street Journal reported on October 11 that Amazon is in talks to acquire artificial-intelligence startup Decart in a deal that could be valued at around $7 billion, citing people familiar with the matter. A deal could come together soon if the talks do not fall apart and no other suitor emerges, the report said.

What happened

Amazon's talks to acquire Decart could value the startup at around $7 billion, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter. The people said a deal could come together soon, assuming the talks do not fall apart or another suitor does not emerge. Israeli outlet Calcalist reported earlier this month that Decart was in advanced talks to be sold to a major technology company. Bloomberg also reported that Anthropic had been in talks in September to buy Decart for about $6 billion and performed due diligence, before deciding against it.

Decart is based in San Francisco and was founded in 2023 by three Israeli engineers: brothers Dean and Orian Leitersdorf, and Moshe Shalev. Its software makes it easier for developers to switch AI workloads between different AI chips. The company is also developing world models called Lucy and Oasis, which can generate and simulate real-world 3-D environments.

Amazon has developed its own AI chip, Trainium3, in competition with Nvidia's graphics processing units. Amazon Web Services gave Decart early access to Trainium3 in 2025 after meeting the company and being impressed by its founders, The Wall Street Journal has previously reported.

Key facts

  1. Deal size: Reported at around $7 billion; no final agreement has been reached.
  2. Funding and valuation: Decart has raised more than $400 million from investors including Sequoia Capital, Benchmark and Radical Ventures, according to PitchBook; it was valued at nearly $4 billion in May.
  3. Founding: Founded in 2023 in San Francisco by Dean Leitersdorf, Orian Leitersdorf and Moshe Shalev.
  4. Products: Software that helps developers switch workloads between different AI chips, plus the Lucy and Oasis world models.
  5. Existing Amazon link: AWS gave Decart early access to its custom Trainium3 chip in 2025.

Why it matters

a deal at around $7 billion would price Decart above its nearly $4 billion valuation from May, and its chip-switching software would enter the AWS system built around Amazon's own Trainium3 chips.
