GitHub Weekly Vol.2: 6 Projects Worth Your Time
Six open-source projects worth your time this week: four tested hands-on, two code-reviewed. Only verified honest takes.

Vol.2: The week of the agent toolbox
This week belonged to the agent toolbox: rendering video from HTML, getting agents to output solid CAD, an npm for skills, auditing agents, Anthropic's official role plugins, and hacking Android photo frames — six projects, all of them tooling for the agent ecosystem. Four tested hands-on, two code-reviewed. Only verified honest takes.

An open-source "write HTML, render video" framework: seekable animation timelines (GSAP/CSS) plus headless-Chrome frame capture plus ffmpeg encoding turn HTML/CSS/JS into deterministic MP4s. Built for AI-agent-driven video production, from HeyGen. Apache-2.0.
- Why look
- The core pipeline genuinely works: init → check → snapshot → render all ran locally with no paid API key. A 2-vCPU box rendered an 8-second 1080p/30fps MP4 (368KB) in 25 seconds, verified with ffprobe and frame-by-frame pixel diffs; static-frame dedup saved about 16.5 seconds.
- The catch
- The "deterministic rendering" pitch is a bit idealized: the default scaffold pulls GSAP from a CDN, which fails outright in proxied or sandboxed environments; lint hard-requires registering window.__timelines, so even pure-CSS animation needs JS glue the quickstart never mentions; the render precheck demands ≥1GB free in both tmp and output dirs (an 8-second clip used tens of MB). 66.7k stars, 366 open issues, and a color-grading fix landed on 10-19.
- Best for
- Developers and agent pipelines producing video in bulk from code; anyone who wants local video rendering with no cloud dependency.
How we tested
Ubuntu 24.04, Node 24, hyperframes CLI 0.8.173 via npx, system ffmpeg, bundled chrome-headless-shell. After hyperframes init, switched to a local npm install gsap (the CDN was unreachable from the sandbox), registered window.__timelines["main"] to pass lint, snapshot --frames 2 (~10s) to eyeball frames, render (~25s) for the final clip; redirected TMPDIR to get past the 1GB disk precheck (this box's /tmp is only 512MB).
-
A CAD plugin for coding agents (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini): the agent writes Python (build123d), and a local Open CASCADE kernel produces STEP/STL/3MF/GLB solid models, with DFM checks, drawings, and manufacturing handoff. MIT.
- Why look
- The offline core works end to end with zero LLM key: a 40×20×6 bracket with two Φ5 through-holes modeled on the first try, and the STEP file read back with a bounding box of exactly 40.0×20.0×6.0. The README is honest about this — in "text-to-CAD," your agent writes the code; the kernel just executes geometry.
- The catch
- The first install is heavy — about 3 minutes and 200MB (the OCCT kernel alone is 64MB) — but it's one-time; modeling itself takes seconds. Telemetry is on by default (cadgen doctor shows sharing on; it can be turned off). 21.4k stars, only 4 open issues, and 0.7.24 shipped on 10-18. Test boundary: CLI plus modeling kernel only; the editor plugin, MCP server, and viewer were not tested.
- Best for
- Hardware and robotics developers who want agents to output manufacturable solid models; anyone tired of cloud CAD.
How we tested
Followed the skill docs' uv route: uvx --managed-python --python 3.13 --from cadgen==0.7.24 — Python 3.13.16, cadgen 0.7.24, build123d 0.11.1. Hand-wrote bracket.py (with @step/@stl decorators); 27 seconds wall-clock produced bracket.step (24.7KB) plus bracket.stl (32.7KB), and cadgen glb build took 17 seconds for the GLB (11.5KB). The uv install initially ran out of /tmp space; redirecting TMPDIR/UV_CACHE_DIR fixed it.
-
An "npm for agent skills": npx skills add installs SKILL.md packs from GitHub into the skills directories of Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, and 80+ other agents, with a skills.sh directory index. MIT.
- Why look
- The installer experience is genuinely npm-grade: 9.7 seconds from clone to verify to install to lock to safety rating, with a hash-pinned skills-lock.json; every install gets an automatic Gen/Socket/Snyk safety table, which is rare among peers.
- The catch
- Vercel's own example skills are thin: 39 lines each, with the real rules fetched from a remote raw file on every use — the SKILL.md itself is a fetch shell. The README's --skill frontend-design example doesn't exist in the example repo, so copy-pasting it fails. Agent-side loading wasn't verified (no Claude CLI on the test box). 35.5k stars against 1,158 open issues — hot, and still rough at the edges.
- Best for
- Anyone distributing or consuming skill packs across multiple agents; teams that want versioned skill management.
How we tested
Node 24, npx. npx skills add vercel-labs/agent-skills --list took ~7.6s to list 9 skills; installing web-design-guidelines and writing-guidelines for claude-code took ~9.7s, landing in .claude/skills/ with a skills-lock.json; npx skills list self-checked in ~1.3s. Read the installed SKILL.md files to judge how thin they are.
-
An independent audit tool for AI agents: 60 checks covering business-KPI-level misalignment, cross-vendor judge scoring, and an A–F grade report. Apache-2.0, PyPI 4.2.0.
- Why look
- Mock mode genuinely runs the pipeline: no key, no network, 10 checks in 3 seconds (8 pass, 2 fail), Grade D, exit code 2 by design; the default fixture is seeded with defects so your first run shows red, and the report carries its own "self-judged, not citable" warning.
- The catch
- The mock "model under test" is a deterministic keyword-matching script, and the self-judge hard-returns a pass on every dimension (source lines 131–140) — mock proves the pipeline is unbroken, not that the checks discriminate. The README is honest about it (the mock section is literally titled "Prove the pipeline runs"). Full mode (all 60 checks, a real model, cross-vendor judging) needs your own API keys and real token spend — not verified. 29.5k stars, 34 open issues.
- Best for
- Teams that want to audit their own agents for misalignment; people who value the methodology and checklist over a letter grade.
How we tested
Python 3.12 venv, pip install ifixai finished in 34 seconds (4.2.0). ifixai run --provider mock --api-key not-used --eval-mode self completed in 3 seconds: B01 (87%) and P01 (72%) failed, the other 8 passed, partial score 60.0%, Grade D; reports landed in ifixai-results/ (summary md, full md, 2.7MB JSON). Read mock_governance.py to confirm the self-judge behavior.

Anthropic's official plugin library for knowledge workers: 11 role plugins (sales, finance, legal, marketing, product, support, and more) bundling skills, connectors, slash commands, and sub-agents for specific job functions. Built for Claude Cowork, compatible with Claude Code. Apache-2.0.
- Why look
- The official reference answer for "role-specialized Claude": each plugin wires the connectors those roles actually use (Slack, Notion, Jira, HubSpot, Figma, and more), ready to be customized into your company's version; related skills show 581K installs on skills.sh.
- The catch
- Purely file-based (Markdown plus JSON, almost no code) — the value is curation, not engineering. Real use needs a Cowork/Code setup plus connected MCP servers (CRM, warehouse, and the like); outside an enterprise environment this one is code-review only. 30.2k stars, 118 open issues.
- Best for
- Teams standardizing Claude usage by role; anyone curious how Anthropic itself structures agent workflows.

Taking over locked-down Android photo frames (Skylight Calendar, BIUFRAME, and more): ADB access, root, backups, custom apps — turning a $50 frame into a family dashboard running your own fullscreen web page. A hardcore hands-on project from Wes Bos.
- Why look
- Genuine hands-on hardware hacking: the device index documents which board each frame uses and which firmware can be cracked, with a YouTube demo of the dashboard running on a real BIUFRAME 10.1-inch frame.
- The catch
- Needs physical hardware; firmware varies a lot by vendor, and bricking is your own risk; no license is stated, so confirm before commercial use; the device links are Amazon affiliate links (tag=webo080-20) — the repo monetizes its recommendations. 1,321 stars, 76 open issues.
- Best for
- Hardware tinkerers with a cheap Android frame to sacrifice; dashboard nerds.
