AWS Open-Sources TorchNeuron: One Config Line Moves PyTorch Code to Trainium Chips
AWS announced TorchNeuron on the official PyTorch blog on October 19: a native PyTorch backend for its in-house Trainium AI chips. Developers can run existing code on Trainium2 and Trainium3 by pointing their model at the neuron device, with no rewrite required; TorchNeuron is open-sourced under Apache 2.0 at github.com/aws-neuron/torch-neuronx, with a public beta opening October 20 at PyTorch Conference North America.

What happened
According to the joint announcement published on the official PyTorch blog on October 19, TorchNeuron registers Trainium as a native PyTorch device: built on PyTorch's PrivateUse1 extension point and the device-agnostic torch.accelerator API, existing code runs by simply calling .to('neuron') on the model, while torch.compile hooks in via backend="neuron", declared once.
It covers eager execution (including an experimental adaptive eager mode), torch.compile, and the Neuron Kernel Interface (NKI) for custom kernels; distributed training supports DDP, FSDP2, tensor parallelism and pipeline parallelism. Hugging Face has added native Trainium support to its developer tools, vLLM has matching inference plugins, and AWS contributed code upstream to PyTorch to remove CUDA-specific assumptions baked into the framework.
Amazon says more than 30 early customers are already using it: voice-AI company Cartesia moved its inference pipeline to Trainium, and the Lieber Institute for Brain Development runs drug-discovery and molecular-dynamics models on the chips with it. Jana van Greunen, Meta's Director of PyTorch Engineering, said in the announcement that native support lets developers tap Trainium's capabilities without reinventing their workflows or leaving the PyTorch ecosystem.
Key facts
- License:Apache 2.0, at github.com/aws-neuron/torch-neuronx.
- Supported hardware:AWS's in-house Trainium2 and Trainium3.
- Migration:a one-line device change, .to('neuron'); code written against torch.accelerator runs unmodified.
- Execution modes:eager, experimental adaptive eager, and torch.compile; NKI custom kernels plus the open-source NKI-lib (FlashAttention, MoE kernels).
- Ecosystem:native support in Hugging Face Transformers, Diffusers and TRL; vLLM and vLLM Omni inference plugins; the Neuron Explorer profiling tool.
- Timeline:announced October 19; public beta and open-source release on October 20 at PyTorch Conference North America.
Why it matters
the software cost of moving to in-house AI chips drops to a one-line change for the first time; AWS simultaneously contributed code upstream to remove CUDA-specific assumptions from PyTorch, open-sourced it under Apache 2.0, and disclosed more than 30 early customers.
