Uber Puts All 30,000 Employees on ChatGPT Work
Uber and OpenAI announced an expanded partnership on October 22: Uber's entire global workforce — roughly 30,000 people — will now use the enterprise AI agent ChatGPT Work. After an earlier pilot with 1,000 employees this year, about 80% of them non-engineers, the rollout goes company-wide. (TechCrunch, October 22)

What happened
The expanded partnership covers more than one front: public reporting says it also includes an AI assistant for drivers and booking rides by voice. But the sharpest move is on the internal side — roughly 30,000 employees worldwide are getting ChatGPT Work, Uber's first company-wide deployment of an agent platform.
ChatGPT Work is OpenAI's enterprise AI agent introduced in July, built to plug into corporate workflows. According to OpenAI's announcement (as reported by Unite.AI), Uber's deployment runs inside ChatGPT Enterprise, connecting to Google Drive, Gmail, Google Calendar, Slack and other everyday tools, backed by Uber's internal AI skills library, approved integrations and employee training.
Uber did not disclose what the rollout costs. Engineering VP Sumanth Sukumar told TechCrunch the company will watch how employees use the tool, what workflows they build and whether it makes them more effective, then use those findings to guide future AI spending.
Key facts
Pilot details: the earlier 1,000-person pilot spanned finance, operations, product and other departments, with about 80% of early users non-engineers. Sukumar said pilot users leaned on it to analyze complex operations data for trends and recommendations, localize training materials across markets and languages, and build personal interactive dashboards for daily work.
Uber's playbook is tools first, usage later. "Our approach is to make powerful AI tools available across Uber while giving teams room to experiment," Sukumar said. Earlier this year, Uber paired 30 AI engineers with teams across the company and gave them two weeks to automate key parts of their jobs — these "AI pods" showed leadership what becomes possible when technical expertise meets deep knowledge of a role.
According to Unite.AI's account of OpenAI's announcement, Uber CTO Praveen Neppalli Naga said: "As AI transforms how we work, we want to give everyone the tools to innovate, solve problems and help shape Uber's future."
Why it matters
ChatGPT Work jumped from a 1,000-person pilot to a 30,000-person company-wide rollout, and 80% of the pilot users were non-engineers — enterprise AI adoption is moving beyond engineering into finance, operations and product.
