Four Giants Donate Key Agent Projects as AAIF Hits Ten Hosted Projects in a Year

The Linux Foundation announced Oct 22 in San Jose that Anthropic, OpenAI, Hugging Face and Alibaba are donating four agent projects to the Agentic AI Foundation, covering agent capabilities, model interoperability, training environments and secure execution.

What happened

The announcement came during AGNTCon + MCPCon North America (Oct 22–23, San Jose McEnery Convention Center). The four additions are Anthropic's Agent Skills, OpenAI's Open Responses, Hugging Face's OpenEnv and Alibaba's OpenSandbox. Together with the Agent2Agent protocol, Agent Router, agentgateway, AGENTS.md, goose and MCP, hosted projects reach 10, up from 3 at the December 2025 launch.

Each covers one layer of the agent stack: Agent Skills is an open format for new agent capabilities (a SKILL.md folder bundling instructions, scripts and resources, loaded on demand); Open Responses, based on OpenAI's Responses API, defines a unified cross-provider model interface; OpenEnv is an open framework and community hub for reinforcement-learning environments; OpenSandbox is a general-purpose sandbox platform for AI apps with multi-language SDKs and Docker/Kubernetes runtimes.

Anthropic says more than 70 agent platforms have integrated Agent Skills since the December 2025 publication — including ChatGPT, Cursor, GitHub Copilot and VS Code — with 1 million skills published and nearly 280 million installs (company figures). The donation covers the name and logo, the GitHub organization and the agentskills.io domain; engineers from Anthropic, Google, OpenAI and others will maintain it as individuals, with David Soria Parra and Mahesh Murag as lead maintainers.

Without the right context, even the most intelligent agents fall short. We launched Agent Skills a year ago to give developers and enterprises alike an open standard to make their agents more capable. Today, we're donating Agent Skills to the AAIF to ensure that anyone building with skills can shape what's next.

Key facts

  1. Four donated projects and donors: Agent Skills (Anthropic), Open Responses (OpenAI), OpenEnv (Hugging Face), OpenSandbox (Alibaba)
  2. Announced Oct 22, 2026 at AGNTCon + MCPCon North America in San Jose (Oct 22–23)
  3. Scale: AAIF grew from 3 hosted projects at its December 2025 founding to 10; founding projects were MCP, goose and AGENTS.md
  4. Agent Skills ecosystem figures (Anthropic-reported): 70+ platforms integrated, 1 million skills published, nearly 280 million installs
  5. Governance: donation covers name, logo, GitHub org and agentskills.io domain; anyone may use or contribute without joining AAIF; roadmap includes versioned releases, a formal proposal process and security guidance for skill authors

Why it matters

four directly competing frontier companies handed four key layers of the agent stack to neutral governance at once for the first time; less than a year after the MCP donation, AAIF has grown from 3 to 10 projects — the foundation era of agent infrastructure is taking shape.
