OpenAI Rolls GPT-6 "Intelligent UI" to All ChatGPT Tiers: Answers Become Interactive Interfaces
Starting October 7 (ET), OpenAI began rolling out GPT-6 and a new "Intelligent UI" to ChatGPT users worldwide: answers in the chat window are no longer limited to plain text — the model picks an interactive format based on the question. Comparisons go side by side, explanations come with manipulable charts, and it can build a savings calculator, bill splitter, or even a mini game right in the conversation. Paid tiers (Plus / Pro / Business / Enterprise, on GPT-6 Sol) get it today; Free and Go (GPT-6 Luna) follow October 8. This is the first time the main chat box used by 1.2 billion weekly users has gone from "text answers" to "interface answers."

What Happened
Starting October 7 (ET), OpenAI began rolling out GPT-6 and a new capability called "Intelligent UI" to ChatGPT users on every tier — what OpenAI calls a significant shift in how people interact with ChatGPT. The schedule: Plus / Pro / Business / Enterprise get it October 7 (backed by GPT-6 Sol), Free and Go follow October 8 (backed by GPT-6 Luna); both models are tuned for everyday conversation. Enterprise availability depends on workplace admin settings; this release touches only the Chat experience in the Chat tab — the models powering Work and Codex are unchanged.
How it works: OpenAI built a library of native, streamable interface components plus a compiler that renders interface elements progressively as GPT-6 generates the answer, without waiting for the whole response to finish. The model is trained to decide content, layout, and when to use interaction: comparisons go side by side, explanations become manipulable charts, and simple questions still get plain text. OpenAI also trained the model to answer while still thinking (GPT-6 Instant): it starts responding to web-search questions 44% sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant (OpenAI's internal testing), and did better at addressing the key aspect of difficult problems than GPT-5.6. On safety, OpenAI says GPT-6 builds on GPT-6 Astra's advances over GPT-5.6 Sol, with stronger resistance to multi-turn bypass attempts and refusals that identify the specific risk rather than blanket-denying.
Key Facts
- The models shipped in September; this is the chat-box rollout: GPT-6 Sol and Luna already shipped to ChatGPT Work, Codex, and the API on September 22; what began October 7 is the rollout, with the new interface, to ChatGPT's main chat box used by 1.2 billion weekly users.
- Google shipped a similar feature in May: Google launched "Neural Expressive" for the Gemini chatbot in May, which also turns answers into interactive interfaces. ChatGPT has 1.2 billion weekly users.
- 44% comes from OpenAI's internal testing: "44% sooner to start responding" comes from OpenAI's internal testing, measured against GPT-5.6 Instant, on web-search questions only, and has not been independently verified. It measures time to start responding, not time to finish the answer.
- Enterprise availability depends on admin settings: The announcement states that Enterprise availability depends on workplace administrator settings; if a company's IT hasn't enabled it, users stay on the old interface. The models behind Work / Codex were not changed in this release.
Context
On August 26, RuntimeWire documented OpenAI's internal GenUI interface system — interactive components embedded in answers, components that could refresh after delivery, and 467 versioned "Learning Block" types. What wasn't confirmed then: the Intelligent UI branding, the GPT-6 tie-in, and the October rollout date — all three were confirmed on October 7. Separately: GPT-6 Astra launched in early September as an autonomous agent model (1.05M context), and GPT-6.1 Astra was shelved at the end of September.
Why it matters
ChatGPT's main chat box, used by 1.2 billion people weekly, moves from text answers to interactive interfaces for the first time; GPT-6 Sol and Luna already reached the API and Codex on September 22, and Google shipped a similar feature for Gemini in May.
