Broadcom Arranges $50B+ Financing for OpenAI Custom Chips; Oracle and SpaceX Also Seek Chip Debt

The Wall Street Journal reported on October 8 that AI infrastructure financing is surging onto Wall Street: Broadcom is arranging more than $50 billion in financing for the custom AI chip it is developing with OpenAI, with Apollo and Blackstone in talks to participate; Oracle is negotiating chip-purchase financing with Apollo and Goldman Sachs; and SpaceX has discussed a $40 billion Nvidia-chip financing with lenders.

What happened

Per the Journal, the new Broadcom financing for OpenAI could cover several gigawatts of custom-chip capacity and is expected to close before year end, though talks are early and the size could change. OpenAI's chip program is known internally as Nexus, with the first- and second-generation versions named after peppers: Jalapeño and Serrano. It follows the companies' partnership announced a year ago to develop 10 gigawatts of OpenAI's custom chips together using Broadcom networking technology, with deployment planned from the second half of 2026 through the end of 2029.

Oracle's financing, intended to bridge the gap between paying for hardware and collecting cloud revenue, would likely involve investors funding a separate company that buys the chips and leases them to Oracle over time — keeping the debt off Oracle's own books. Separately, the Financial Times earlier reported on SpaceX's talks around a $40 billion chip financing for Nvidia chips. The Journal notes the public bond market has been pushed to its limits after cloud providers issued hundreds of billions of dollars of bonds for AI build-outs, so buyers are now turning to Wall Street investment firms for tens of billions of dollars per deal.

Key facts

  1. Broadcom × OpenAI: : more than $50B in financing for custom AI chips, covering several gigawatts of capacity, targeted to close this year
  2. Chip codenames: : OpenAI's chip program is internally called Nexus; gen-1 Jalapeño, gen-2 Serrano — part of a 10GW partnership deploying from H2 2026 to end of 2029
  3. Oracle: : in talks with Apollo and Goldman Sachs; likely a separate financing vehicle that buys chips and leases them back, keeping debt off Oracle's books
  4. SpaceX: : in talks with lenders on a $40B financing for Nvidia chips (first reported by the FT)
  5. Context: : cloud providers have issued hundreds of billions in bonds for AI build-outs, pushing public debt markets to their limits; new buyers like OpenAI and Anthropic want to own infrastructure to cut costs and dependence

Why it matters

Broadcom is arranging more than $50 billion in financing for the custom chip it is developing with OpenAI; per the WSJ, cloud providers have already issued hundreds of billions in bonds, and buyers are turning to Wall Street for custom financing.
