Google Opens Frontier Models to 200 European Scientists with $3M in Compute Credits
Per Reuters from Brussels on October 14, Google DeepMind and Google Cloud announced they will give up to 200 European scientific researchers direct access to their frontier AI models, together with $3 million in compute credits. The pledge was announced at an AI summit in Dublin in support of the EU's RAISE (Resource for AI Science in Europe) initiative.

What happened
Per Reuters from Brussels on October 14, Google DeepMind and Google Cloud announced they will give up to 200 European scientific researchers direct access to their frontier AI models, together with $3 million in compute credits. The pledge was announced at an AI summit in Dublin in support of the EU's RAISE (Resource for AI Science in Europe) initiative.
The researchers will get direct access to Google's scientific tools: AlphaFold 3, WeatherNext, AlphaGenome, AlphaEvolve, and AlphaEarth Foundations. Google said this will help researchers tackle complex scientific challenges faster, from predicting extreme weather patterns to mapping molecular structures.
The pledge was announced by Maureen Costello, Google Cloud's vice president for the UK, Ireland and Sub-Saharan Africa. Google said the commitment supports the EU's AI for Science work by helping bridge the compute gap European scientists sometimes face through the RAISE initiative; researchers are selected by the European Commission through RAISE.
Key facts
- 200 people, $3M: up to 200 European scientists share a $3 million pool of Google Cloud compute credits (Google has not published allocation rules).
- Five scientific tools: AlphaFold 3 (molecular structures), WeatherNext (weather forecasting), AlphaGenome (DNA research), AlphaEvolve (algorithm-design agent), and AlphaEarth Foundations (Earth mapping from satellite data).
- RAISE context: RAISE is the EU's AI-science resource initiative aimed at helping European research teams access advanced AI and computing; the announcement landed in the same week as the first enforcement actions under the EU AI Act — regulation tightening and research cooperation happening in parallel.
Why it matters
Google is for the first time handing frontier-model access to the European research system in bulk, tied to the EU's RAISE initiative.
