Bill Gross Launches Idealab.ai: 1.2 Million AI-Generated Startup Ideas Free to the Public
According to an official GlobeNewswire release on October 19, serial entrepreneur Bill Gross (founder of Idealab, behind 175+ companies) launched Idealab.ai: a platform applying AI to his 50 years of entrepreneurship experience and methodology. It analyzed over 17 million sources to generate 1.2 million business ideas, all searchable and free from day one.

What happened
At launch, Idealab.ai offers search, filtering, idea briefs, saving, and a "Labs" feature to take an idea further, across 1.2 million business ideas. Later versions will add applying for funding and finding collaborators. The long-term ambition is to catalyze 1 million new businesses and 100 million new jobs.
Gross told Fast Company the AI system's dataset included expired patents, SEC filings, consumer complaints from social media, and science publications. "I've got a database of 1.2 million ideas that basically solve pretty much every world problem because it was trained by reading every world problem," he said.
Partners include Arizona State University, Imperial College London, Caltech and Cloudflare. Cloudflare is reported to offer $100,000 in cloud credits to new companies founded on the platform. Gross is also assembling funding, targeting a launch by end of 2026 and aiming to connect founders worldwide with $100 million in potential funding over the long term.
Beyond the idea database, the platform offers AI startup resources: a chatbot trained on Gross's lectures and writings over the years, and a "periodic table" of 118 startup functions (from email marketing to facilities management) paired with software tools; where no software exists yet, Idealab.ai plans to build it.
Key facts
Background: Bill Gross has 50 years of entrepreneurship, including 30 years building companies through Idealab entities; Idealab and Idealab Studio have launched 175+ companies including GoTo.com, Citysearch and Tickets.com.
Data scale: the AI analyzed over 17 million sources (research publications, patents, filings, news reports) to generate ~1.2 million business concepts, filterable by industry, geography, market size, capital needs and team requirements.
Free model: ideas are available without buying exclusive rights. Gross said: "My life has been about finding important problems and building companies to solve them. AI now gives us the ability to extend that process to millions more ideas and potential entrepreneurs."
Why it matters
as AI is widely framed as a threat to jobs, Idealab.ai is the first large platform built to "mass-produce entrepreneurs" with AI. It turns founding a company from "waiting for inspiration" into "searching a database" — if it works, it changes how startup ideas are supplied.
