Flapping Airplanes Raises $1 Billion at a $6 Billion Valuation
On October 21, AI research lab Flapping Airplanes raised $1 billion at a $6 billion post-money valuation. The round was led by Index Ventures and Lux Capital, with Sequoia Capital, Alphabet's GV and Kleiner Perkins participating.

What happened
Flapping Airplanes is an AI lab focused on foundational research that has yet to introduce a commercial product, one of a growing group the industry calls AI "neolabs" — research-first labs. It works on training AI models with substantially less data and computing power, and on making chips more efficient, an approach that runs counter to the industry's dominant strategy of scaling up datasets and compute.
Lead investor Index Ventures disclosed that the team numbers only a couple dozen people, all working in person in San Francisco, optimizing every layer from GPU kernels through pre-training, post-training and inference. Its "megakernels" run an entire program on a GPU as a single kernel, eliminating the wasted time between steps.
We're thrilled to double down and lead their $1B Series A, with Mark joining the board. If the future of AI depends on getting more from less, we can't think of a better team to shape it.
