Anthropic Merges Claude Chat and Cowork Into One Enterprise Conversation

On October 23, Anthropic opened its unified chat and Cowork experience to Enterprise customers: a conversation starts as chat and moves into an isolated cloud sandbox when code execution or file work is needed, then returns to chat.

What happened

The unified experience reached Pro and Max users in September and extended to Enterprise customers on October 23. The same conversation spans web, desktop and mobile: cloud tasks continue after a laptop is closed, existing chats, projects, connectors, skills and plugins carry over, and the conversation returns to chat when the task is done, with no switching between two interfaces.

The administration setting is listed as “Chat and Cowork unified.” Administrators can enable it early or choose to keep it disabled; they can restrict access by role, limit model choices, and set organization, group and individual spending limits; a new Efficient mode confines the unified experience to Sonnet and Haiku models. For Enterprise, network access from the work sandbox is off by default, connector credentials stay outside the sandbox, and single sign-on and the Compliance API continue to apply.

The switch has a defined exception scope: organizations using zero data retention, a HIPAA-ready configuration, or customer-managed encryption keys stay on their current setup and do not join the default switch-on. Billing remains usage-based, Anthropic lists the unified experience as an administration setting in its Enterprise announcement, and existing organizations can decide their own enablement timing before November 16.

Key facts

  3. Conversation shape: Starts as chat, moves into an isolated cloud sandbox for code or file tasks, then returns to chat.
  4. Cross-device continuity: One conversation across web, desktop and mobile; cloud tasks continue after a laptop is closed.
  5. Default switch: Existing organizations have it off by default, switching on by default on November 16, 2026; administrators can enable it early or keep it disabled.
  6. Admin controls: Role-based access, model choices, organization, group and individual spending limits; Efficient mode confines use to Sonnet and Haiku.

Why it matters

Enterprise is the last major group covered by the unified experience, the November 16 default switch turns an administrator choice into a setting that takes effect automatically when the date arrives, and organizations on exception configurations are outside this switch.
