OpenAI Upgrades ChatGPT Chrome Extension: Chat Reads Tabs, Work Mode Operates the Browser

What happened

OpenAI's announcement on X read: "A few big upgrades for Chrome users today! We're bringing the power of computer use to anyone who uses Chrome." The demo showed ChatGPT comparing three open sofa-shopping tabs by dimensions, prices, delivery time and return policy, with no copy-pasting by the user.

Work mode is OpenAI's agent for complex multi-step tasks. In it, users can have ChatGPT fill out a registration form from an event brief (stopping before submission), collect vendor pricing from several tabs into a comparison sheet, compare contractors' terms across tabs and draft an email to the best fit, fill out a new-dentist form and add it to the calendar, download files, and organize or group open tabs.

The upgraded sidebar lets users access their full ChatGPT history without leaving the page they are browsing. The extension is available to users on every ChatGPT plan, and works in Chrome plus other Chromium browsers including Edge, Brave and Opera. OpenAI had previously retired its in-house Atlas browser.
