ADNOC, OpenAI and G42 Sign Deal: First Energy Firm to Deploy OpenAI Frontier
Abu Dhabi National Oil Company ADNOC signed a multi-year deal with OpenAI and G42 on Nov 2 at ADIPEC, becoming the first energy firm to deploy OpenAI Frontier.

What happened
The deal was signed in the presence of Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman attending the ADIPEC energy show. Reuters reported the agreement, confirmed by the Abu Dhabi Media Office, under which ADNOC integrates advanced AI capabilities across its operations. G42 joined through its subsidiary Inception42, and OpenAI Frontier technology is deployed on G42's sovereign AI infrastructure in the UAE.
ADNOC named two priority uses: field master planning, where the company says the system could cut preparation and optimization of complex field development plans from months to hours, a company projection rather than a measured result; and cybersecurity, advanced through OpenAI's Daybreak Blue initiative. Reporting says the system connects operational, investment and commercial decisions across production, processing, refining, logistics, sales and trading, with human experts retaining oversight of major decisions.
The energy deal was one of four Abu Dhabi-OpenAI agreements signed the same day, covering government services, investment and education rollout: sovereign investor Mubadala works with Inception42 and OpenAI on AI for investment analysis; Inception42 and OpenAI signed a five-year agreement to spread frontier AI across UAE government, business and education; and a 'machine-readable government' initiative covers government services. None of the four agreements disclosed financial value or a timetable for full implementation.

Why it matters
frontier models move from chat products into an energy firm's production, processing, refining and trading decision chain, deployed as an agent platform on local sovereign infrastructure rather than plain model calls.
