Airbnb to Launch AI Travel Agent in First Half of 2027 as Q3 Revenue Grows 19% to $4.87 Billion
Airbnb said on Nov 5 that its in-house AI travel agent will reach consumers in the first half of 2027; third-quarter revenue of $4.87 billion, up 19% year over year, was its fastest growth in more than three years.

What happened
The timing and form were set out after the US market close on Nov 5: Airbnb's third-quarter shareholder letter says the AI travel agent will reach consumers in the first half of 2027, after the company had previously only said within the next year. The agent will not use a traditional chatbot; instead it draws from a library of hundreds of travel-specific interface components — maps, photos, comparisons, calendars, itineraries — and composes them in real time to match what the user is looking for. CEO Brian Chesky told analysts the experience will feel "a little bit like generative UI," offering "the right interface at the right time."
Chesky explained the build-it-yourself case on the call: general-purpose agents like Muse and Instinct are good at simple routine tasks such as making a restaurant reservation or scheduling an appointment, but travel is different — travel is aspirational, 80% of travelers say they enjoy spending time researching trips, people want to look at photos, compare homes and make decisions with the people they are traveling with, and general-purpose agents are not the best interface for that. The shareholder letter says nearly 20 years of bringing hosts and guests together is informing how the agent is built, and that it will eventually cover services and experiences beyond homes and hotels.
The agent's job goes beyond booking: the shareholder letter says it will help guests throughout their trip — from changing a reservation or resolving a payment issue to getting help with refunds, rebooking, or 24-hour safety support — things an outside agent cannot easily do on its own. Chesky also said, according to reports, that Airbnb will open the platform to external AI agents through the MCP protocol. After the results, Airbnb shares rose about 12% in after-hours trading, according to reports.

- As reported: Chesky said Airbnb will open the platform to external AI agents through the MCP protocol, and the shares rose about 12% in after-hours trading after the results
Why it matters
a travel platform is building its own agent — skipping the generic chatbot for a generative interface that assembles maps, photos and itineraries on demand — and with quarterly revenue growth at its fastest in more than three years, Airbnb is tying the AI assistant to its reaccelerating growth.
