OpenAI to Pool ChatGPT and Codex Usage Into One Allowance From December
An OpenAI Help Center page updated October 31 says that from December, Plus, Pro and Business usage allowances will be shared across ChatGPT and Codex and measured in tokens.

What happened
The pooling accompanies Work's agent capabilities moving into the main ChatGPT experience, according to the Help Center page. On Plus and Pro plans, Codex, ChatGPT Work, Excel and PowerPoint already share one agent allowance; from December, chats with advanced models join the same allowance.
Metering changes with it: usage is measured in tokens, with more advanced models and more complex tasks consuming more of the allowance. Instant chat does not draw from the allowance. The Usage page in Settings will show the combined remaining allowance and reset times, and users who reach the limit can wait for the reset, upgrade their plan, or buy credits to continue using eligible features.
The page gives only December, with no exact date and no allowance size per plan. The pooling differs from the October 29 doubling of Pro and Business Premium limits: that change adjusted allowance sizes, while this one merges metering across products. OpenAI says on the page that it expects most users will not need to wait for a reset more often than they do now.
Key facts
- Plans: Plus, Pro and Business
- Effective: December, with no exact date published
- Unit: Tokens, consumed differently by model and task
- Excluded: Instant chat
- At the limit: Wait for the reset, upgrade the plan, or buy credits
- Already shared: Codex, Work, Excel and PowerPoint already share an agent allowance on Plus and Pro
- Where to check: Settings Usage page shows the combined balance and reset times
- Difference from October 29: October 29 doubled Pro and Business Premium limits; this change pools metering across products
Why it matters
With chat and coding drawing on one balance, heavy coding runs and everyday chats consume the same allowance, moving paid plans from per-product metering to token-based metering.
